Octavo, pp. xxiii, 512, [1 leaf] errata, 6, viii; xi, 617, [1 leaf] errata, viii; xi, 587, viii. 19 maps & plans, (12 folding), 39 plates (incl. many portraits), & 10 facsimile plates (4 folding or double-page).  Original gilt-crested, red cloth bindings under clear protective, mylar dust covers.  A very fine set with near-pristine, original bindings, all pages bright and clean, with all contents intact including the large folding map in rear pocket of Vol. III.  Second Edition of "one of the most accurate and detailed accounts available on the sieges of Louisbourg and Quebec" (TPL) during the Seven Years' War, Limited to 520 copies. Knox was an officer in the 43rd Regiment of Foot and arrived in Nova Scotia with his regiment in 1757, serving there in garrison and in the subsequent 1758 siege and capture of Louisbourg. In 1759 the 43rd was also in the battle of the Plains of Abraham that resulted in the surrender of Quebec and participated in the events leading to the capitulation of Montreal in 1760. Knox's personal observations from his field journal are supplemented by entries drawn from order books and other important contemporary documents, official orders, and correspondence, both British and French. Included here are many plates, maps and facsimiles not found in the original edition. TPL 324. Howes K-222 ('aa' rating). DCB IV pp. 415-16.
